GPT-6 is OpenAI's newest family of AI models, and since October 7, 2026 it's what answers you in ChatGPT's Chat tab. Unlike past model swaps you barely noticed, this one changes how answers look: GPT-6 can reply with charts, buttons, forms and small working tools instead of only text. OpenAI calls that Intelligent UI.
There are three GPT-6 models behind the name. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol, Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna, and the Pro thinking setting runs on GPT-6 Astra. Below you'll see which one you have and what the new answers are good for at work. You'll also see how to turn the visuals down if you'd rather read plain text.
Last verified against OpenAI's announcement and Help Center on October 8, 2026. OpenAI is still rolling this out, so details can shift.
Which GPT-6 do you get on your plan?
A model is the AI engine that writes ChatGPT's answers. OpenAI now gives each engine a name, and your plan decides which one you talk to.
| Your ChatGPT plan | Model behind "GPT-6" in Chat | When it started |
|---|---|---|
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | October 7, 2026 |
| Free and Go | GPT-6 Luna | Rolling out from October 8, 2026 |
| Pro thinking setting (Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, Enterprise) | GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra | Since Astra's launch in September 2026 |
OpenAI says Sol and Luna are both "tuned for everyday conversation." Sol is the bigger of the two. Luna is the lighter, cheaper one, which is how OpenAI can offer it on the free plan.
You won't see the words Sol or Luna in the menu. You'll see GPT-6. It replaces the old "Latest" option, and if you had Latest selected, you move to GPT-6 at the same thinking level. If you had picked GPT-5.6 Sol on purpose, you stay on GPT-5.6 until you switch.
One thing to know if you're on Free or Go. OpenAI's announcement says GPT-6 Luna reaches you starting October 8. On the same day, its Help Center page still names GPT-5.6 Luna as the default for Free and Go, including the Think option for harder questions. OpenAI's own pages don't agree yet. If your menu doesn't show GPT-6, the rollout probably hasn't reached your account. Check again in a few days.
What Intelligent UI actually does
Think about how you'd explain something to a coworker. Sometimes you talk. Sometimes you grab a whiteboard and draw a quick chart. Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT make that same choice.
OpenAI says GPT-6 was trained "to compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on your question." In practice an answer can include:
- Charts and graphics that show a trend or a comparison at a glance
- Tappable buttons to pick an option or jump to the next step
- Forms where you type your own numbers
- Small interactive tools, like a calculator built on the spot for your exact question
You don't need a special prompt. ChatGPT decides when a visual helps, and it still answers in plain text when text works better.
The other change is speed. GPT-6 can start answering while it's still thinking, then add more detail as it goes. For questions that need a web search, OpenAI reports that GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner, on average, than GPT-5.6 Instant. That's OpenAI's own measurement of when the answer begins, not how long the whole answer takes.
Four work tasks where an interactive answer beats a wall of text
These are things you can try this week. ChatGPT picks the format, so you might get text instead. When that happens, ask it to show you the answer as a chart, a table or a calculator.
1. Comparing options. Paste three vendor quotes and ask which one fits your budget. A side by side view, with each option on its own line, is easier to scan than three paragraphs.
2. Quick math you'd normally do in a spreadsheet. Ask how a price change affects your monthly margin, or how to split a team dinner bill. A small calculator lets you change one number and see the result move, without writing a formula.
3. A plan with steps. Ask for an onboarding plan for a new hire or a launch checklist. Steps you can tap through are easier to follow than one long list.
4. Explaining something to your boss. Ask ChatGPT to turn last quarter's numbers into a chart you can talk through. Check every number against your source before it goes in a slide.

How to turn the visuals down
Not everyone wants buttons in their answers. If you prefer reading, here's what OpenAI's Help Center says you can do on ChatGPT on the web:
- Open Settings.
- Turn off Layout and visuals.
That reduces the visual elements. It doesn't switch ChatGPT back to a text only mode, so some visuals can still appear. You can also just ask for "text only" in your message.
A few other limits worth knowing:
- The Pro thinking setting has no Intelligent UI. It still runs on GPT-6 Astra, and you get regular answers there.
- Older desktop apps don't support it. OpenAI says the older ChatGPT apps for macOS and Windows can't show these answers. Use ChatGPT on the web instead.
- Update your phone app. On mobile you need the latest version.
- No extra quota. Intelligent UI doesn't have its own usage limit. Your plan's normal limits still apply.
What GPT-6 doesn't change
This update is about the Chat tab. OpenAI says the models in ChatGPT Work and Codex aren't changing in this release. If you use those, you're still on the versions OpenAI released in September.
It also doesn't change what a good answer needs from you. A chart built on a vague question is still a vague answer, only prettier. And a nicer answer isn't a system. Say you redo the same report every Monday. GPT-6 can make each attempt faster, but one good chat doesn't become a repeatable process by itself. Someone still decides the steps, where the data comes from and who checks the result. That part is on you, or on a workflow you build around the tool.
How GPT-6 got here: a short timeline
GPT-6 didn't arrive all at once. Here's the order, from OpenAI's own announcements:
- Early September 2026: OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, which it calls its most intelligent model. In ChatGPT it went to paid plans.
- September 22, 2026: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna arrived in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. Free and Go users could use Luna in the desktop app, but not yet in Chat.
- September 29, 2026: OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol for Work, Codex and the API. It isn't the model behind GPT-6 in Chat.
- October 7 and 8, 2026: GPT-6 with Intelligent UI came to the Chat tab, first for paid plans, then for Free and Go.
So if you read about GPT-6 a month ago, you were probably reading about Astra. The GPT-6 most people meet in Chat is Sol or Luna.
