ChatGPT Sites: Build Work Tools Without a Deploy Pipeline

ChatGPT Sites is OpenAI's public-beta host for dashboards, trackers, and internal tools inside ChatGPT. See plan access, limits, and when you still need a real app.

ChatGPT Sites is OpenAI's public-beta feature for building and hosting a website, web app, or lightweight internal tool inside ChatGPT — then sharing a link — without standing up your own deploy pipeline. If you just got Sites on Plus or Pro and you want to know whether it can build the work tool you keep asking IT for, this page is the job-first answer.

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Sites in public beta in July 2026, with Pro, Pro Lite, and Edu first and Plus following, plus public publishing for Business and Enterprise (Enterprise stays off by default until an admin enables it). The October 2, 2026 release notes add Edit site for Plus and Pro owners, cloud schedules from Automations, and a Sites showcase on your profile. Product facts below are checked against OpenAI's Sites docs and Help Center release notes.

What ChatGPT Sites is (and is not)

Per OpenAI's Sites docs, Sites lets ChatGPT create, host, refine, and share websites, web apps, and games. You start from a prompt (mention "website" or @Sites) or from a compatible local project, review a preview, refine in chat, then manage sharing from the Sites view in ChatGPT on the web or in the desktop app.

It is: a hosted experience for dashboards, trackers, calendars, prototypes, portals, and similar tools you describe in plain language.

It is not: a full app platform with payments, health data, or arbitrary backend stacks. Every deployment URL is a production deployment. If you want to review a build before it goes live, ask ChatGPT to save a version without deploying it.

Who can use Sites right now

OpenAI's Sites docs list Sites in public beta on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. It is not on Free or Go. Plan-specific usage limits apply across all Sites during the beta; ChatGPT shows current limits and warns as you approach them.

Help Center release notes for the expanded beta also state that Sites rolled out to Pro, Pro Lite, and Edu first, with Plus following over the coming days, and that public publishing plus the expanded beta rollout were not available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom at launch. If you do not see Sites yet, check plan, region, and workspace admin settings.

Public URL publishing for Business and Enterprise shipped with the July 2026 public beta (Enterprise public publishing stays off by default until an admin enables it). October 2, 2026 is about Edit site, Automations cloud schedules, and the profile Sites showcase — not the first public-beta launch.

Three work tools Sites is actually good for

OpenAI's own docs and release notes call out dashboards, project trackers, launch calendars, prototypes, internal portals, and reports. Concrete starter shapes for non-coders:

  1. Request tracker for ops. Team members submit requests, see owners, update status, and filter the list. Ask for workspace sign-in and durable saved records between visits (Sites can use D1 for structured data).
  2. Launch calendar. A shared calendar or board for campaign dates, owners, and assets — refine in chat, then share with the workspace or invited viewers.
  3. Team dashboard. A read-only or light-write view of metrics or issue lists. With plugins (where enabled), a Site can load each visitor's own connected-app data after they sign in with ChatGPT.

You describe audience, purpose, required behavior, and data. You review. You iterate. You share. That is the loop.

From the Sites docs (re-check on write day; beta limits move):

  • D1 database storage: 10 GB per Site. R2 object storage has no fixed storage limit in the table OpenAI publishes there.
  • No PHI or payment-card data. Do not process Protected Health Information or payment-card data; do not enable financial transactions; do not target children under 13 (or applicable digital-consent age); follow OpenAI policies.
  • Every deployment URL is production. Save a version first if you need a review candidate.
  • HTTP, HTTPS, and WebSockets are supported; raw inbound/outbound TCP is not.
  • No data residency / inference residency at launch for Sites, including code, D1/R2, artifacts, and logs.
  • Analytics (unique visitors and page views) is available for Sites that are not owned by an Enterprise workspace, per the docs page.

Sharing can stay owner-only, invite-only, workspace-wide, or public (when allowed). External invitations for named viewers were rolling out on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise.

When Sites is enough — and when you still need a real app

Sites is enough when you need a shared internal tool fast, your data fits the supported storage model, nobody needs payments or health workflows, and you are fine hosting on OpenAI's Sites runtime.

You still need a real app platform when you need PCI/PHI, custom private networking, unsupported frameworks, background services Sites does not host, strict data residency, or a full product with its own compliance program.
