Junior Software Engineer Salary in 2026: What BLS Data Shows

BLS May 2025: software developers earn a $135,980 median and $82,460 at the 10th percentile. What moves a junior salary and which path in fits you.

A junior software engineer salary in the US starts near the bottom of the software developer pay range. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts that floor at $82,460 a year (10th percentile, May 2025). The median for all software developers is $135,980. BLS does not publish a separate junior figure, so anyone quoting one exact "junior average" is quoting a job board, not the government. Below: what the official numbers say, what actually moves a first salary, and which path into the job fits your starting point.

Last verified: October 5, 2026. Every BLS figure on this page comes from the Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for software developers, which BLS last updated on August 27, 2026 (May 2025 wages, 2025 to 2035 projections). State medians are May 2025 OEWS estimates for software developers (SOC 15-1252). The junior title average is from Indeed's US salary page for the title, updated September 18, 2026. If a junior salary number has no date next to it, treat it as a rumor. Including ours.

What does a junior software engineer actually earn?

BLS doesn't split pay by seniority. What it does publish is the full spread for the roughly 1.7 million people who worked as software developers in 2025, and that spread is the honest starting point.

Measure (May 2025, BLS)Annual pay
Software developers, lowest 10% earned less than$82,460
Software developers, median$135,980
Software developers, highest 10% earned more than$214,670
QA analysts and testers, median$104,300
QA analysts and testers, lowest 10% earned less than$61,440
All US occupations, median$50,980

Read the median carefully. It includes developers with twenty years in the job, so a first offer gets measured against the lower part of this range, not the middle. The 10th percentile is the closest thing to an official floor, and even that sits more than $31,000 above the median for all US workers.

Indeed puts the US average for the junior software engineer title at $86,345 a year, based on 718 salaries taken from its job postings over the past 36 months (page updated September 18, 2026). That sits just above the BLS 10th percentile for all software developers, which is what you'd expect for an early-career title that job boards invent and the government does not.

Verdict: if a page promises you the $135,980 median in your first year, it's selling something. Plan your budget around the lower band and treat anything above it as upside.

The growth forecast got cut in half, and most salary pages missed it

The old version of this article quoted BLS projecting 22% growth from 2019 to 2029. The current projection for software developers is 10% from 2025 to 2035, about 174,700 new jobs. That's still more than three times the 3% average BLS projects for all occupations, but it's less than half the number people were repeating a few years ago.

BLS also expects about 106,100 openings a year across developers, QA analysts and testers. Many of those come from replacing people who retire or change occupations, not from brand new positions. BLS ties the demand to software for AI, the Internet of Things, robotics, automation and security.

Verdict: the door is open, just narrower than the 2019 headlines claimed. That's why we'd weigh the evidence you can show an employer over any growth statistic.

What moves a junior salary up or down

Industry. This is the lever with the cleanest data. BLS median pay for software developers in May 2025, by industry:

IndustryMedian annual pay
Software publishers$164,550
Manufacturing$136,330
Management of companies and enterprises$135,680
Finance and insurance$135,460
Computer systems design and related services$132,050

That's a $32,500 gap between the top and bottom of the list. These are medians for every experience level, so a junior offer in each industry will land lower, but the ranking is the useful part.

Role title. Developer, tester and programmer are different pay bands. Software developers sit at a $135,980 median, QA analysts and testers at $104,300, and computer programmers at $100,390. A testing job can be a way in, but know that you're starting about $31,680 below the developer median.

Location. Pay tracks where the job is. May 2025 OEWS median annual pay for software developers (SOC 15-1252) in the top five states: California $174,410, Washington $166,540, New York $166,180, Massachusetts $165,210, and Oregon $142,720. Those sit well above the national median of $135,980. Remote roles blur this, and some employers adjust pay to where you live.

Education. BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry credential and "none" for required work experience. Typical isn't mandatory. It tells you what most hiring managers are used to seeing, which matters when your CV has to get past a filter before a person reads it.

Three paths to a first developer paycheck

All three can end in the same job title. They differ on time, structure and who they suit.

A computer science degree

The route BLS describes as typical. A bachelor's usually takes four years of full time study.

Best if you're early in adult life, can afford the time, and want the credential most employers expect. Avoid it if you already have a degree in another field and bills that won't wait four years.

Teaching yourself

Free courses, documentation and your own projects. The cost is low and the timeline is open. The catch is the day it gets hard and there's nobody to ask.

Best if you already build things, you're disciplined without deadlines, and you have developers around you to review your work. Avoid it if you've started and stopped more than once.

A structured program

4Geeks Academy's AI Engineering program runs 24 weeks, pairs you with mentors for when you get stuck, and includes career support for the job search. It's built for career changers and early technical professionals who want to build real AI systems. It is not for people who only want ChatGPT prompts or a weekend crash course. If you already ship production code with frameworks like React or FastAPI, AI Engineering for Developers is the closer fit.

Best if you need structure, feedback and a fixed finish line. Avoid it if you want a light introduction to AI tools rather than a new career.

We won't quote you a placement rate or a starting salary for graduates here. Ask any program, ours included, for those numbers in writing, with the date and the sample size.

Salary is one input. The bigger one is whether you'll finish the path you pick. If you want to see which program fits your starting point, talk to an advisor and compare the tracks side by side before you commit to anything.
